Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary

The visitor can enjoy the quietness of the clear blue skies of La Guajira peninsula, interrupted only by intensely pink skies spiraling over the lagoons of the Sanctuary. It is the sight of flocks of flamingos, the slender birds from which the protected area derives its name. The graceful flamingos and the majestic color for their plumage are the main attraction of the Sanctuary, which, despite its small extension, is considered one of the most diverse of the protected areas in terms of its variety of aquatic resident and migratory birds.

Want to see wild pink flamingos in Colombia (flamencos)? Here’s a quick guide on where to go to see these beautiful birds in their natural environment.

I think it’s safe to say that flamingos are among the most spectacular birds on the planet. Their spectacular color and strange characteristics mean that spotting them can be one of the most unique travel experiences you can have in Colombia.

The best place to see wild flamingos in Colombia is at the Los Flamencos Sanctuary (Santuario de Fauna y Flora Los Flamencos) near the village of Camarones in La Guajira. This is close to the main northern port city of Santa Marta.

Flamingos. Visitors hoping to spot Colombia’s fabulous pink flamingos must travel to the department of La Guajira, on the Caribbean coast. There’s a huge lake, part of Parque Natural Los Flamencos near Camarones, a small indigenous settlement, where these migratory birds return in their hundreds.

They are relatively easy to see in the Bahamas, Aruba, and Cuba, as well as along the coasts of other Caribbean islands and the adjacent coasts of Central and South America. Regular wild vagrants travel as far north as Florida and are often sighted in Everglades National Park or elsewhere in southern Florida.

These pink flamingos are generally not migratory birds, which means they stick around this region all year round.
A fun fact is that these guys get their color from their diet! This is the result of metabolized microscopic algae containing carotenoids. As the flamingos eat this algae and brine shrimp (which also feed on the algae), it results in its famous pink feathers.

You can watch flamencos feeding at Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, located in the town of Camarones, 15 minutes south of Riohacha. There, in an area encompassing 7000 hectares, hundreds of these birds stick their beaks into the estuary of the Camarones River in search of the artemia salina—a species of brine shrimp that give flamingos their pink color. Flamingos also feed on the larvae of shrimp and other species.
