Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary
The visitor can enjoy the quietness of the clear blue skies of La Guajira peninsula, interrupted only by intensely pink skies spiraling over the lagoons of the Sanctuary. It is the sight of flocks of flamingos, the slender birds from which the protected area derives its name. The graceful flamingos and the majestic color for their plumage are the main attraction of the Sanctuary, which, despite its small extension, is considered one of the most diverse of the protected areas in terms of its variety of aquatic resident and migratory birds.

You can watch flamencos feeding at Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, located in the town of Camarones, 15 minutes south of Riohacha. There, in an area encompassing 7000 hectares, hundreds of these birds stick their beaks into the estuary of the Camarones River in search of the artemia salina—a species of brine shrimp that give flamingos their pink color. Flamingos also feed on the larvae of shrimp and other species.
