Developers sought for Seven Islands 1


Cape Coral is poised to take another step forward with the long-discussed Seven Islands project, as representatives expressed support Wednesday for partnering with a commercial real estate company to find developers for the northwest Cape’s mixed-use “destination point.” 

Wednesday’s meeting was nonvoting, but the formal proposal to hire CBRE will be on a City Council agenda in the coming weeks. At least four council members expressed support for contracting the company. 

“First and foremost this is an economic development project,” said Michael McShea, CBRE executive vice president, adding that the city’s plan to make the land a destination point was ambitious. 

The council approved a development plan for the seven rectangular islands in November 2016 for residential, hotel/resort and commercial development up to eight stories, as well as public amenities such as a park and marina. The land is barren now, with just grass and trees on its 48 acres. 

The design concept plan for Seven Islands includes 995 housing units — 924 multifamily/condo/apartment units and 71 single family/fish house units — a 240-room hotel or resort with a 25,000-square-foot meeting space, 45,000 square feet of commercial space and a community center. 

Tropicana Park, which is included in the city’s parks master plan, is also included in the design plan, just north of the “islands.” Each island is connected to the land on the east.
